This series visually determines relationship atmosphere. I began my investigation with the transformation within fluctuating relationships. Early self-portraits shown in slide 1 lack the clarity to connect to this idea. I decided to change the direction of my series to communicate the presence of loneliness in a group. Can one feel as though they remain isolated even among fellowship? The choice to visually describe loneliness in a group setting evolved from my research of portrait artist Elly Smallwood and revision of processes through experimentation. Research slide 3 is a visual representation of altering a former piece with my revised process with piece 4 as the result. As my SI progressed, I chose to use thick, wet paint applied with loose, free-flowing strokes. In pieces 6,7, and 8, I used a charcoal stick to generally inform the composition and form of the figures. Later in pieces 9 and 10, I used a grey oil pastel stub to allow for focus on the paint itself. These pieces feature orb-like shapes which are the movement within the relationship space. Through the removal of detail in the figures and their surroundings, developing the idea of loneliness became better clarified.
